In contrast to the species-rich and aesthetically-pleasing ditches and drains, there are many ditches and drains that appear both unpleasant and unvalued which, at best, leads to indifference in terms of public interest. These under-managed waterways are often along roadsides and are the first and only contact that many members of the public will have with the habitat. Every effort should be made to keep these areas free of pollution and litter and to promote pride in the local population. This can be achieved in part, at least, through arranging local events to raise the profile of the habitats and organising local work party events to keep the areas clean and aesthetically pleasing.
