The reference state for wet heath in Wales would have bog mosses (Sphagnum spp) well distributed throughout. Regular and intensive burning, which can be a problem on commons used for stock-grazing, will reduce the amount of Sphagnum in the habitat and consequently reduce the ability of the habitat to retain moisture. Regular and unmanaged burns will also have a negative impact on the fauna and flora associated with the habitat.
