Urban changes are construction (buildings or transport and communication networks), waste dumps or extraction sites, or renewal.
Urban
Urban expansion
The unrestricted expansion of densely populated urban spaces into rural or previously vegetated areas. Moves from vegetated land to non-vegetated (level 1). Level 3: From NTV (P1) to AS (P2). Time period: decades.
Levelling
The process of flattening ground by infilling or cutting the surface. Used to create a straight base for a new development. Remains non-vegetated, unless vegetation was cleared (level 1). Level 3: From NTV or AS (P1) to AS (P2). Time period: days to weeks.
Urban renewal
The redevelopment of a built environment to address urban decay. Remains non-vegetated, unless vegetation is used as part of renewal process (level 1). Level 3: From AS (P1) to NTV or AS (P2). Time period: years to decades.
Urban greening
The increase of green space in urban areas, including parks, trees, urban farms and other forms of vegetation. From non-vegetated to vegetated (level 1). Level 3: from AS (P1) to NTV or CTV (P2). Time period: months to years.
Densification
The densification of urban areas through increased development, gentrification and urbanisation. Remains non vegetated (level 1). Level 3: remains AS. Time period: years to decades.
Wind damage
Damaging winds are defined as sustained winds of gale force (63 km/h) or more or wind gusts of 90 km/h or more (100 km/h or more in Tasmania). Remains non-vegetated, unless extreme (level 1). Level 3: From AS (P1) to NS or BS (P2). Time period: hours to days.
Road construction
The construction of a new road where it previously did not exist. Generally remains non-vegetated, but could have changed from a vegetated area through clearing (level 1). Level 3: From NTV or AS (P1) to AS (P2). Time period: months to years.
Road improvement
The improvement of a road to increase efficiency, safety and/or usability. Road improvement can involve extending the width, rebuilding the road with new asphalt, or general maintenance. Remains non-vegetated, unless vegetation was cleared (level 1). Level 3: From NTV or AS (P1) to AS (P2). Time period: months to years.
Road abandonment
Abandonment of roads that can result in increased vegetation growth, or pollution from road materials. Non-vegetated land that can move towards vegetated land (level 1). Level 3: AS (P1) to NS or NTV (P2). Time period: years or decades.
Rail construction
The construction of a railway where previously it did not exist. Remains non-vegetated, unless vegetation was cleared (level 1). Level 3: From NTV or AS (P1) to AS (P2). Time period: years.
Extractive industry not in use
Land formally used for extractive industry but no longer in use and no new use observed. This includes mining sites undergoing rehabilitation. From non-vegetated to vegetated (level 1). Level 3: from AS (P1) to NTV (P2). Time period: months or years to decades.
